Move over Mattachine! Magnus Hirschfeld founded the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee – likely the first LGBT advocate group ever. And it was in Germany in 1897. Yes, Germany. In 1897.
Magnus Hirschfeld was a doctor and sex researcher who apparently had a lot of gay patients with suicidal tendencies.
And he really meant the LBT part. He advocated for all sexual minorities as well as racial equality.
The Nazi’s and Hitler Youth, of course, destroyed the organization’s archives in public book burnings in 1933. You can read more of that here.

Today, Magnus Hirschfeld National Foundation exists to “support research and education about the life and work of Magnus Hirschfeld, the Nazi persecution of homosexuals, German LGBT culture and community, and ways to counteract prejudice against LGBT people”
